Ohio Housing Needs Survey - Content and Modules
The HNS, which contacts a random sample of Ohio adults, consists of eight modules. The questions that are asked depend on housing tenure (homeowner with mortgage/lien, homeowner without mortgage/lien, renter, or other occupant) and geographic location (the eight-county shale region – composed of Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson, Monroe, and Noble – or the remaining 80 counties).
Module 1: Script and Consent (all study participants)
- Ensures respondents are informed of the study and willing to continue
- Ensures respondents are, in fact, adults primarily residing in Ohio
- Asks for county of primary residence and tenure for later modules
Module 2: Demographic Information (all study participants)
- Determines size and composition of respondent’s household
- Asks for race, ethnicity, and education level of respondent
- Asks about type of current residence and time lived there
- Develops profile of household income and debt levels
Module 3: Homeowner Questions (homeowners only)
- Asks about current and previous levels of housing costs
- Estimates level of financial stress imposed by those costs
- Develops profile of mortgage amortization and composition
- Asks for estimate of home value and likelihood of selling
Module 4: Renter Questions (renters only for most questions)
- Asks for amount, frequency, and legal standing of rent payment
- Estimates level of financial stress imposed by housing costs
- Develops history of rent changes during duration of occupancy
- Evaluates difficulty of locating desired rental housing in area
- Asks about future housing plans/desires (incl. "other occupants")
Module 5: Affordability Questions (all study participants)
- Asks about financial strain caused by various categories of debt
- Develops respondent opinion of impact of debt on borrowing ability
- Asks about financial impact of pursuing education (if applicable)
Module 6: Shale Questions (eight-county region residents only)
- Asks respondents about impact of drilling on housing cost/quality
- Asks respondents about impact of drilling on the community
- Asks respondents about impact of drilling on personal finances
- Determines change in housing situation resulting from drilling
Module 7: Opinion Questions (all study participants for most)
- Develops estimate of ability/desire to buy (renters/occupants only)
- Asks respondents to evaluate financial desirability of homeownership
- Asks respondents to evaluate personal, community, and national stability
